Stockholm, Sweden, December 14, 2015 – The climate deal outcome reached in Paris is a very positive step towards a greener, healthier global future says Blueair, the world’s leading mobile indoor air cleaning technologies company.
“The Paris agreement is a turning point in getting the world community to finally start tackling global warming cohesively,” said Bengt Rittri, founder and CEO of Blueair. Mr. Rittri added that he hoped the agreement would now also help spur more focus to be paid to contamination of indoor air, which can be many times more contaminated than the air on a street outside and has been linked to rising rates of asthma, COPD, Alzheimer’s, and other diseases.
Mr. Rittri noted that Danish political scientist, environmentalist and author Bjorn Lomborg recently pointed out in a contribution to Forbes Magazine that while fossil fuels get much of the blame for causing the air pollution that kills around 7 million people every year, the reality is that very many of those deaths result from indoor air pollution caused by people burning fuels inside their own homes.
“More evidence of the health risks posed by bad indoor air quality came in a study earlier this year in Beijing by researchers at Tsinghua University in the Chinese capital who concluded as much as 80 percent of the PM2.5 inhaled by Beijing residents is in their homes and offices rather than the open air ,” said Mr. Rittri.
The Blueair CEO said that another recent Chinese study - published by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology –rejected the notion that people could escape indoors to avoid outdoor pollution. Researchers at the prestigious Shanghai Fudan University found that while closing doors and windows barely reduced health hazardous PM2.5 concentration, use of an air purifier ‘efficiently reduced’ the amount of the fine particles in the indoor air, which resulted in improved heart and lung function.
“Blueair was founded on the ethos that everyone has the right to breathe clean air and that means acknowledging that while we must tackle global climate change, we need also to understand how we can already today create safer and more liveable indoor environments for future generations,” Mr. Rittri said.
